Between centuries XVIII and XIX it was the destination of some of the most important expeditions that had left of São Paulo with the purpose to populate the interior of the country, and to explore the great gold graves of the region. In 1977, the state was divided in two, giving origin also to the Mato Grosso of the South.

CUIABÁ

It is the capital of the state, in century XVIII was important an important center in the route of the gold. Currently it is a farming polar region, and center of studies and ecological inquiries. Some of its constructions still exhibit traces of its past in the cycle of the gold. The Church of the Rosary, constructed for slaves in 1722, possesss a great altar all spotted in gold. The Museum of Rocks Ramis Bucar counts on an exposition of rocks, and still it possesss a collection of 4.000 parts of archaeology.

 
National Park of the Chapada of the Guimarães - From little more than the 60 kilometers of Cuiabá it is the National Park of the Chapada of the Guimarães, an only space formed by mountains that seem cut, precipices, waterfalls and canyons. Its main attraction is the "Veil of the Fiancé", a waterfall of 86 meters of height, beyond the rocky formations of the House of the Rock and the Hill Is Jerônimo.
 

PANTANAL

Together with the Amazonian forest, the Pantanal is one of the biggest reserves of existing unbroken natural life. It is formed by an enormous low land prairie, total covered for an exuberant vegetation and flowers that unclasp at the time of rains. It has more than 400 million years it was a separate interior sea of the ocean for mountainous chains, possess about 250.000 km2, divided between the states of the Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso of the South, beyond a part in the south Bolivia and the north Paraguay. It forms the biggest continuous humid area of the planet. It possess a great number of rivers and crystalline water lagoons, that at the time rainy overflow, arriving to reach in some points up to 3 meters above of its habitual level, flooding this immense aluvial plain; the rivers form bays and canals that create islands where the animals take refuge themselves.

 
The Pantanal shelters one of the biggest animal and vegetal reserves of the world, is a true ecological sanctuary, the Brazilian ecosystem where better if it can observe the fauna, with more than 80 species of mammals, 650 of birds, 50 of reptiles, and 235 of fish.
